Becoming a new parent is one of life’s most meaningful transitions. Early pregnancy often begins with excitement! Sharing the news, imagining your baby, and dreaming about the little one who will soon join your family.
As the months go on, that excitement naturally shifts into new questions, physical changes, and the desire for trustworthy guidance. As a midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), I’ve supported families through every stage of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. I understand the emotional ups and downs new parents experience, and my goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and truly prepared for the journey ahead.
What Does it Mean to be "Ready"?
Parenthood is a series of important steps. To navigate them with confidence, it helps to review the key milestones:
Choosing the right care team for your needs.
Understanding which tests are necessary.
Finding ways to feel your best during pregnancy.
Learning how to communicate effectively as a couple.
Building a connection with your baby before they arrive.
Preparing mentally and physically for birth.
Setting the foundation for a successful breastfeeding journey.
Planning for the realities of the postpartum period.
Preparing for life with your new baby.
While this provides a framework, the beauty (and the challenge) is in the details in between.
Focusing on the Postpartum Journey
In my years working at birthing centers, I noticed that parents often receive a wealth of information about pregnancy and birth. While these are monumental steps, the postpartum phase is the journey that lasts the longest.
At Birth Gardens, our mission is to prepare you for breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and life with a newborn, so you feel just as confident after birth as you do walking into the delivery room.
The postpartum experience is a major transition — physically, emotionally, and socially. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, your identity, routines, and relationships shift in meaningful ways. Preparing for these changes helps you move through this season with more clarity and confidence.
Physical Changes After Birth
Have you considered how your body will change after birth? Your balance shifts, your body needs to recover from the "marathon" of labor, and your breasts undergo constant changes every single day as milk production begins. If you’re unsure what to expect physically, now is the ideal time to learn about postpartum recovery, breastfeeding changes, and newborn care so you can feel prepared rather than overwhelmed.
Emotional Resilience in the Fourth Trimester
I often describe the postpartum period as an "explosion of emotion." Between shifting hormones and the inevitable fatigue, your feelings may be all over the place. Do you have a plan to anticipate and navigate these waves? Having a plan to anticipate and navigate these feelings is essential. Building emotional resilience helps you stay grounded and supported during this transformative time.
Social and Identity Transitions
Postpartum is not just a physical recovery, it’s a social and identity shift. You are becoming a parent to a new little person, and your family dynamic evolves with each baby. Even your friendships and social circles may change.
Preparing for these transitions helps you move into your new role with more grace, confidence, and connection.
Preparation is Key to a Confident Postpartum
You can never know exactly what life will bring, but you can prepare for the physical, emotional, and practical changes of the postpartum period. Finding the right support during this questioning and preparation phase is essential.
Support during this phase can take many forms:
in‑person consultations
virtual lactation visits
prenatal breastfeeding classes
postpartum education
Books
community groups and so much more
Building your support team now is one of the most important steps you can take to feel confident and cared for once your baby arrives.
At Birth Gardens, we would love to be part of your team. Whether you’re looking for a prenatal breastfeeding course, postpartum lactation support, or expert guidance through the fourth trimester, we’re here to help you feel informed, supported, and ready to thrive.
